Extra! Extra! FTC Announces Workshop: ‘Can News Media Survive the Internet Age? Competition, Consumer Protection, and First Amendment Perspectives’
The Federal Trade Commission today announced it will hold a series of workshops titled “Can News Media Survive the Internet Age? Competition, Consumer Protection, and First Amendment Perspectives.” The first workshop will be held on September 15, 2009.
The news industry is in transition. Newspapers have lost much of their classified advertising revenues to online services, and some question how they will weather the development of targeted behavioral and other online advertising, online news aggregators, and other factors. How cable, broadcast, and other news organizations will respond to similar challenges is under discussion. Some predict that in a few years, television and radio will find themselves in situations similar to those facing newspapers.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–Clint Smith, an experienced general counsel who saw MySQL AB through its $1 billion acquisition by Sun Microsystems in 2008, has joined the executive team at TrialPay. Prior to his work at MySQL, Smith headed the legal departments at Macromedia and UUNET Technologies. Clint Smith brings more than fifteen years of technology and corporate law experience to TrialPay and will serve as the company’s Vice President and General Counsel. Top U.S. Radio Company Switches to Flash Technology to Reach Millions of Online Listeners
SAN JOSE, Calif.–Clear Channel Radio, Inc. and Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that Clear Channel has chosen the Adobe® Flash® Platform for its digital audio and video solution. A beta version based on the Adobe Flash Platform is now available at iheartradio.com and will start rolling out to radio station sites over the next few weeks. Adobe Flash Player – already installed on more than 98 percent of Internet-connected desktops – will enable listeners to tune in to Clear Channel stations on the Web without having to download additional software.
“We switched to the Adobe Flash Platform to bring the highest-quality experience to our listeners and advertising partners,” said Paul Miraldi, senior vice president of programming and marketing for Clear Channel Radio’s Digital Division. “Flash technology allows us to present hundreds of stations and literally thousands of pieces of on demand content, from songs and music videos to exclusive performances and news footage in the most ubiquitous and easy-to-use format.”

3FN Service Specializes in Hosting Spam-Spewing Botnets, Phishing Web sites, Child Pornography, and Other Illegal, Malicious Web Content
A rogue Internet Service Provider that recruits, knowingly hosts, and actively participates in the distribution of spam, child pornography, and other harmful electronic content has been shut down by a district court judge at the request of the Federal Trade Commission. The ISP’s upstream providers and data centers have disconnected its servers from the Internet.
