ASP Welcomes Software Professionals

Indiana, IN USA – ASP, the Association of Shareware Professionals, will be at the Software Industry Conference 2008 (SIC.ORG), held between July 17 and 19, taking place at the Boston Marriott Quincy in Massachusetts.
Along with a key speech on participation focusing on safer downloads, ASP is also organizing an ASP Lunch where all attending volunteers are recognized and rewarded for their service to the association. A hospitality room, where everybody is welcomed for discussions on the shareware community, will also include an interactive presentation, and one-to-one meetings.

Moss, Norway - FNProgramvare has released CATraxx v. 8.0 for Windows, a
powerful music organizer that makes it easy to catalog your entire music
collection, including MP3 files, vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs.
Unlike cataloging software that requires you to type all of your
information, CATraxx can automatically download CD data from the
Internet. In addition, it can find all of the music files on your
computer, and add all of the information from their audio file tags to
your music database. If you edit the tags in the database, CATraxx can
even update the audio tags embedded in your music files.

“Free Software CD” Internet Operation Settles FTC Charges

Defendants who allegedly offered “free” software CDs that weren’t free, and billed unsuspecting consumers for a software continuity program they didn’t know they were enrolled in, have agreed to settle FTC charges that their practices violated federal law. The settlement bars the illegal practices in the future and requires the defendants to give up more than $2 million for consumer redress.

FTC Testifies on Spyware

June 11, 2008: The Federal Trade Commission today told the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation that “legislation authorizing the Commission to seek civil penalties in spyware cases could add a potent remedy to those otherwise available to the Commission.” In testimony to the Committee, Eileen Harrington, Deputy Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said that when other enforcement options – seeking consumer redress or making the operators give up their ill-gotten gains – are not appropriate or sufficient remedies to deter spyware distributors, “a civil penalty may be the most appropriate remedy and serve as a strong deterrent.” The testimony states that the agency supports legislation that would provide “the Commission this valuable law enforcement tool.”
